Onnagata ( or oyama) is in Japanese kabuki theatre, where a woman's role would be played by a male actor. The modern all-male kabuki theatre was originally known as Yaro Kabuki (man kabuki) to stand out from the more older forms of the kabuki theatre.
Early 17th century, many kabuki theaters had an all-female cast ( known as
onna kabuki) where there would be women playing the male roles as well as the female roles. And also there was wakashu kabuki (adolescent kabuki), is a cast full of young attractive male actors playing both male and female roles.
